Qatar has reaffirmed the special emphasis it gives to the development of education as a basic pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Addressing the 23rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva during an interactive discussion with the Special Rapporteur on the right to education Kishore Singh, Noor Ibrahim al-Sada, second secretary at Qatar’s permanent mission to the United Nations in Geneva, pointed to the establishment of the Supreme Education Council as the competent authority responsible for the development and advancement of education in Qatar
In her speech, Noor Ibrahim al-Sada hailed Singh’s participation in the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) in Doha last year, during which HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser launched the Educate a Child initiative, an effort that, al-Sada said, would contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in education.
She underlined the keenness of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani on finding innovative means of funding education.
In this regard she referred to the Emiri decision of May 22 that established a health and education fund with a capital of QR360bn to provide sustainable financial resources to fund educational programmes.
She added that Qatar welcomes the recommendations of the special rapporteur, especially his call for creating a mechanism that protects the right to education.
In this regard, she pointed to HH Sheikha Moza’s call for the Human Rights Council to develop an accountability mechanism similar to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) so as to limit the scope of violations, eliminate discrimination in access to education and ensure its availability to all groups of society.
