International Mobiles for Education Symposium (m4Ed4Dev)

The first International Mobiles for Education for Development (m4Ed4Dev) Symposium was held in Washington, DC on 18-19 August 2011. This two-day symposium aimed at exploring cutting-edge intersections between mobiles, education and development. The conference brought together researchers, project implementers, and leading thinkers in the area of mobiles to assess the current state of “m-learning”, to investigate potential areas where it can help achieve Education for All goals and to consider how it can be integrated into future programming and initiatives.
Mobile solutions discussed and demonstrated during the symposium included tools designed to be used in or outside school, to deliver or create content and to enable interaction. Among the mobile learning solutions presented were theeGranary Digital LibraryFrontline SMS, Interactive Mobile Assessment for All,Mobile Technology supporting early literacy instruction, Project Activate andWorldreader – Books for All.
UNESCO was part of the m4Ed4Dev planning committee. David Atchoarena, director of the Education sector division of UNESCO Headquarters and Francesc Pedró, in charge of the team on Sector policy advice and ICT in education, took part in this international collaborative effort.
