Education spending rising but access to higher education remains unequal in most countriesEducation at a Glance 2012 indicators show that countries can gain long-term economic and social benefits from investing more in education. The report says governments should increase investment in early childhood programmes and maintain reasonable costs for higher education in order to reduce inequality, boost social mobility and improve people’s employment prospects. This year’s report also includes indicators on public and private spending on education, tuition fees, adult participation in education, class sizes, teacher salaries and decision-making powers of schools, and analysis of national exam systems and the criteria for attending tertiary education
Attaining and Sustaining Mass Higher Education Mass higher education has become either an aspiration or a reality. Over 500 higher education policy-makers, institutional leaders and academic experts active in higher education representing 70 countries attended the biennial General Conference of the OECD’s Programme for Institutional Management in Higher Education on 17-19 September in Paris, to debate the many new issues and challenges for countries. |
